Thabied Majal

Mr. Majal, a long-time associate of the IAHET through sponsoring prizes for the annual Golf Day, joined the Board of Trustees in July 2018.

He is currently Corporate Development Executive at Sanlam, a position he has held since January 2011. A member of the Sanlam Emerging Markets executive, Mr. Majal is the company’s representative director on the boards of its Tanzania, Mozambique and Uganda subsidiaries.

Since joining Sanlam 15 years ago, he also served as an executive in the office of the Group CEO as well as Marketing Head of Institutional Markets.

Prior to joining the insurance giant at the end of 2002, Mr. Majal worked as a management consultant for a diverse cross section of clients with a specific emphasis on marketing, sales and business strategy, strategic planning as well as Black Economic Empowerment.

After graduating with a BSc from the University of Cape Town in 1984, he spent 16 years with Warner Lambert pharmaceutical company, rising to Director of Global Marketing Planning at the company’s head office in New Jersey, USA.

Saleem Triegaardt

Mr Triegaardt, who has been a long-standing member of the Board of
Governors, joined the Board of Trustees to take over the position of
Treasurer that had been vacated following the passing away of Sabier Patel in June 2017.

After completing his studies at UWC and UCT, Mr Triegaardt started out as  an accounting teacher. He moved to Standard Bank, eventually leaving as Director, Business Banking Western Cape.

He joined Mercantile Bank as the Western Cape Provincial Head in 2010, a position he still holds.

Fatiema Haron-Masoet

Fatima Haron-Masoet is the youngest of the late Imam Abdullah Haron’s three children. After receiving her National Diploma in Art and Design, she worked as a pattern-maker at several leading clothing manufacturers including Woolworths, Monviso and Bibette. She is presently a senior administrator at Masoet Dental, a family-owned business. Ms Haron-Masoet also serves on several community organisations including Radio 786 and An-Nisa, an organisation for women.

Maria Macdiarmid Ingouville Burton

Mary Burton as she is known, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and educated there and in Sao Paulo, Brasil. In 1961 she married Cape Town businessman Geoff Burton, and they have lived in South Africa since then. They have 4 sons and 10 grandchildren. Ms Burton joined the Black Sash, a women’s organisation opposed to apartheid, and various other civil and human rights organisations. She served as the National President of the Black Sash from 1986 to 1990, and is currently a member of its Board of Trustees. In 1994 she was appointed to serve as the Provincial Electoral Officer for the Western Cape province in the country’s first national democratic elections. In 1995 she was appointed by then President Nelson Mandela as a Commissioner with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. At present she is an Honorary Research Associate at the Centre for African Studies at the University of Cape Town.

Brian Isaacs

Mr Brian Isaacs has served as principal of South Peninsula High School in Diep River since 1984. Mr Isaacs, who holds B.Sc, HDE and M.Ed degrees from the University of the Western Cape, has been at South Peninsula High since starting his teaching career in 1977. His association with the institution goes back even further as he also completed his schooling there. A layminister at All Saints Church in Lansdowne, Mr Isaacs also serves as secretary on a variety of community-based organisations including the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW), the Western Cape Parent Teacher Student Forum and the Lansdowne Tennis Club.
